The Dimensions of character within second-hand shopping

Sarah - SPIT

An avid and long-time second-hand shopper, Sarah shops at SPIT at least once a week, but as she puts it “Everyone knows me here. I come almost everyday. You have to come often to find the good things.” I asked her what good things she found that day and showed me the array of plant pots that she had just purchased. She told me that they are very beautiful and that she liked the colors and the style. “I bought plant pots today in brown and orange because my house is brown and orange. I couldn-t find pots like this in a new store. I would have paid 200 euros for them.” Overall, she likes SPIT because “it-s cheap and I like the things. I like to look around and get old things that look new.” She shops at SPIT for all sorts of reasons but according to her mostly for “the price, the choice, the personality of the things, I buy everything here!”

Sarah also mentioned some other interesting reasons, “You need time to come here and shop and that-s why I like it because it I can take the time to find the things I want. It-s not only the price why I shop here. The things have to be in good quality but most of the time they are. I can find good quality things for very cheap. I even bought an iron 4 years ago that I still use. Things work here.” Another interesting reason is that the items have more of a personal touch or maybe a life story they carry with it. As said by Sarah, “I think it-s nice that people give their things to Spit and that other people can buy them. It-s personal, like I know those people. I like this very much.” At the end of our conversation, I asked Sarah if she only bought household things at SPIT and she laughed saying, “I buy hand bags here. I think I-ve bought like 10 handbags here at SPIT and every time I wear one I get a compliment. They say, that-s a beautiful bag! And I say thanks, it was 2 euro… LAUGHS.” Buying more than 90% of her household items and personal things at SPIT, I think it-s safe to say that Sarah is a very dedicated second hand shopper.
