The Dimensions of character within second-hand shopping

Lydie - SPIT   e

Another avid and longtime second-hand shopper is Lydie, who shops at SPIT at least once a week but overall she states: “I buy almost everything from 2nd hand stores. I go to the market too and buy things 2nd hand there.” Lydie says that she buys furniture and kitchenware at SPIT but more specifically looks for decorations, table cloths, napkins and porcelain. She told me that “I change my decoration of my house very often. I like to change it every 2 weeks or so and I can do that when I shop here. I have so many decorations from here and I like the different designs of the things. I can-t do that if I shop at new stores. One tablecloth is around 25 euros and I have maybe 20 at home that I got for around 2-5 euros a piece at SPIT.” In addition to the selection and the price of the things, Lydie also told me that she likes the personality and the quality of 2nd hand things. When asked to describe the cake dish and flowerpots she had bought that day, she said: “The cake dish is beautiful and it was only 8 euros. I chose it because I thought it was very beautiful and very unique, it-s old and has a lot of personality. When asked about the characteristics she normally looks for when shopping she said: I look for old things. But I look for old things that are good quality. That-s why I like buying porcelain and crystal here because I know they are good quality.” I like antiques and SPIT is an excellent store to buy antiques at a good price. Most older items have personality; things that you can-t find anywhere anymore.”
