The Dimensions of character within second-hand shopping

Joan and Sylvie - SPIT

At the end of the annual SPIT day, I caught up with Joan and Sylvie, a mother and daughter who are frequent shoppers at SPIT. That day they were buying lots of flowerpots and one special dish for a bonsai tree. I asked them why they bought these flowerpots at SPIT and they told me “because there is a lot of choice, all different sizes and all different colors, so you can choose and it-s cheaper, especially (compared to) when you buy it new.” Joan and her daughter agreed SPIT was ideal for buying little knick-knacks and finding furniture such as good quality wood wardrobes and cupboards. Joan said that 2nd hand things “are more special, you can find some very nice, rare things” and her daughter also said it is possible to find some a very rare wood material that is very expensive in the new shops. Joan said that she passes by SPIT at least once a week to see what-s new and that she comes here often to replace things that have broken, like glasses. Sylvie said that she likes to buy the little things, ” like pots and things I don-t need. It-s more like I want to shop and I don-t have money so I go to SPIT and I find some really nice things to buy.” When asked how they felt about being SPIT shoppers, they exchanged looks and agreed that they both felt very good about it!
